I remember everything that happened last year. I was at my friends house writing music at two in the morning, and all of the sudden we both get texts about Jimmy. My friend wasn’t a big A7X fan and he knew how much I loved Jimmy, so he hesitated to tell me. I remember I couldn’t even look at the drumkit in the corner without tearing up. The very next day, I played every single Avenged Sevenfold song I knew on the drums, then I proceeded to constantly look up what happened on the internet. I’m still in shock to this day. In honor of Jimmy, I’ve made my stage name Fiction to help spread his legacy and impact on my life to others. May he rest in peace. Jimmy, we all will love you foREVer, no doubt about it. I can’t believe someone of whom I’ve never met before has impacted me in such a way, from tears to fears. I love you bro.

Comment by Croat December 28, 2010 @ 6:10 amOne year on and it still hurts knowing Jimmy is actually gone, in some ways even more now that we know we will never get new music from him, have our lives influenced by him in new ways, or hear new funny stories about him from those who knew him. Sure we might get stories from the past, but nothing new. Its so sad to lose someone with so much promise, so much life, so much talent and to lose them so early. I will never forget being awoken in the middle of the night, seeing people’s tweets and a message from a friend and just not believing it. I cried so much in the following hours, days, weeks, even months. Losing Jimmy (even tho I never knew him) brought with it the pain of losing all those I’ve lost in my life before, and I couldn’t help but imagine and empathize with the pain his family and friends were going through. A year on I still feel that pain, tho time has dulled it some, but the tears will still come when I think of him too much or when I think of the guys and his family trying to continue their lives without such a vibrant light in it.
To the band and Jimmy’s family, both immediate and extended, today, as with all year, the Avenged family is with you in heart and thought. Take comfort in the fact that Jimmy hasn’t truly left us, he was merely too special to be allowed to stay, his light, energy, and talents were called away to be enjoyed on a more eternal level. I firmly believe his beauty and light was merely transfered from earth to the heavens to shine down on us and watch over us. He’s probably sitting up there shaking his head and laughing at us all, telling us not to cry, that he’s having a blast and he can’t wait for everyone to join him because he’s got the most kick ass concert planned for when we do.
Today I’ll raise a glass to honor Jimmy, remembering him on the day of his death, tears will likely be shed, but then I’ll blast some Avenged, maybe A Little Piece of Heaven, and I’ll smile and remember the good things, the music, the antics, and his smile.

I just cannot find words for how I feel right now. How we all feel, really. It doesn’t feel quite real yet, but on the other hand it does.
I remember the day I found out and I badly want to forget it, but it’s stuck in my mind for what seems like eternity. My mother told me because I had been asleep pretty much all day – something I never do. I was dreaming about Jimmy as well, for some reason. Anyway, when she came into my room and said “It’s The Rev…” with that tone in her voice. I knew. I screamed at her that it must have been a joke, and that “He’s The Rev! He’s fuckin’ immortal!” I knew she was telling the truth though. It had been on TV, she told me. So of course, I had to see the proof. I cried. I cried fucking hard.
There will be people out there that won’t understand this, that will tell you to move on – believe me, I’ve experienced that today already. We should brush them off like we have done with every other day, they want us to get angry and they want us to cry. None of us should cry, Jimmy would want us to go crazy, celebrate his life and music. I’m not going to lie, I’ve already cried. I think I’ve got all of that out and now I can smile wider than I’ve ever smiled and laugh louder than I’ve done.
Over the past year, Jimmy has never left my mind – not for a second. None of them have. I keep thinking how I need to smile through the pain because Avenged Sevenfold need us. They need our help in this, just like we need theirs.
My heart goes out to the guys, the Sullivan family, Jimmy’s friends and all of you fans. Raise your glasses to Jimmy tonight and have a good fuckin’ time.
I’m going to be sitting blasting out Avenged Sevenfold, Pinkly Smooth, Pantera, Mr. Bungle and Oingo Boingo from my speakers tonight. I’ll have a candle lit and I’ll be singing the songs to Jimmy.

I was reading through all the comments, determined not to cry, and then I came to yours and I burst into tears. “He’s The Rev! He’s fuckin’ immortal!” is what did it for me. I almost thought I couldn’t cry anymore, because I haven’t been able to for almost this entire year. So thank you, for your beautiful comment and for expressing my own feelings better than I ever could have. <3
I cannot bear to turn on any Avenged Sevenfold or Pinkly Smooth songs, nor the All Excess DVD or any other videos of him or the other guys. It just hurts way too much. I'm sticking to Mr. Bungle for today, I think, as well as playing Fiction on my piano if I find the courage.
If it hurts this much for me, I don't want to imagine the pain for the people that actually knew him. He's still alive in our memories of him and I'm never going to let him die.

This was beautiful Sami, not because it was coated with ticky-tack emotions and words of pity (which it was far from coated with!) but because it was the real, raw, relatable moments and emotions and thoughts we all as fans and family of Avenged Sevenfold went through. I remember sitting on my computer, just off the phone with my best friend who i actually showed A7X to more than a year earlier, and then seeing “The Rev” posted by the band on Facebook. I said the same things, but rather than cry, i was numb for hours. I went to bed, where I usually listen to A7X as i fall asleep, but this time in silence. Then i watched Live in the LBC, and the moment Jimmy smashes down the opening beat to Critical Acclaim, i burst into tears for what would be hours of sobbing. This spoke to me because I was where you were, and I am where you are still, where we all are. Thank you for this, as a gigantic fan of the band, this speaks volumes to all of us. :)

I’m going to remember his life, not sulk about his death. He left behind music and memories, and they help us keep him alive.

From rocking out at shows, to chasing stallion ducks and becoming the knife master, and his free spirit, Jimmy has captured all of our hearts. A year later, he still has our hearts. It’s a shame I never got to see you play, but I’m thankful I get to see Avenged Sevenfold for the second time on January 26th.

Comment by iliana December 28, 2010 @ 9:01 amI truly can’t believe it’s been a year. So much has happened between then and now, but there hasn’t been a day where I haven’t thought of him. I know everyone here can understand that I’m not exaggerating.
I didn’t find out until around 11am on the 29th. All afternoon and almost all night on the 28th, I was working on finishing a scholarship application that I absolutely had to mail out the morning of the 29th. I don’t remember why anymore, but for some reason the application put me under so much stress that I wasn’t sure I would make it through the night alone. I had to walk to the library in the morning to make a copy of my birth certificate to send with the application, but the library didn’t open till 10 and I had to be home for a house showing at 10:30. I didn’t think I could make it, so at 3 in the morning I called my best friend (also named Jimmy, heh) and asked if he could come out to drive me. He was going to, but his mom wouldn’t let him. I cried and cried. When I woke up in the morning, my horrible night continued into one of the worst, most stressful mornings of my life. But you know what I did? The whole morning while I was walking to and from the library, mailing my application, etc., I listened to Avenged Sevenfold, because I knew their music would get me through. And it did.
With the application behind me, I finally logged onto my computer at 11am. I went on Twitter and saw the trending topic #RIPTheRev. I was fucking crushed. But you know what? Like M. Shadows said, today is not a day for mourning his death, but rather for celebrating his life (as is every day!). I am eternally grateful for his contributions to this world (and for helping me get through that horrible night, even when he was already gone and I didn’t know it).
Rest in peace, Jimmy. We all love you, and you are now truly immortal.

we went from watching you christmas eve to finding out one of the most tragic things any fan or friend could ever here…not only was jimmy the best drummer known to man but he was one unique individual who brought me and my brother so much closer…thank you jimmy for your time on this earth and thank you for being you…crazy mother fucker :)were trying to hold the tears back but they still keep falling one year later…i actally had the honor of meeting matt,syn,and zacky in august…best day of my life but something was missing and i kept waiting for it but i knew it would never come…just waitng for jimmy to jump out the wood work and kick me in the face or make me piss my pants with his sense of humor…lol…but in light me and my brother are celebrating jimmys life today with some easy listening(avenged sevenfold and pinkly smooth)some refreshments(40s in the park)and wherever he decides to take us today…heres to jimmy the best friend and drummer and one could ask for… *till we meet again*

I meant every word on it. There are kids going crazy on tumblr posting photos, videos, and quotes about him. We all love and miss him so much even if we haven’t met him. Him and all the A7X guys have had a huge impact on our lives and it’s incredible. The first thing she showed me was their Live at the LBC DVD and i didn’t pay much attention to it then, but then a month later i actually took the time to listen to their music and it’s changed me. I would watch their videos on YouTube all night, nonstop. Anyway, when i became obsessive over them, it broke my heart when i found out that Jimmy had died last year…………..I really wish I knew of their existence longer :( But since then, it feels like i’ve known of them foREVer. I’m so glad i know about them now instead of it being later.

still so hard to believe jimmy the rev sullivan is my idol, my hero he has inspired me to learn drums and guitar everything music. the world lost a great man on this day 1 year ago. the rev was great at everything he tried and did. best drummer/singer/pianist ever. he will always be remembered in my heart. I didnt know him personally but as to the rest of the avenged sevenfold family im sure we all agree that it sure as hell seems like we knew him. There’s way too much that can be said about The Rev. I’m gonna keep it short and say, in my opinion, he was the coolest, funniest, most talented, most amazing person in the world. I never got to meet him, but i know he was a great person. R.I.P.

Today i would like to thank the parents of Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan for bringing him into this world and raising him to be the person he was during his time with us here on earth. Simply because i couldn’t this time last year. Jimmy was an unbelievably inspiering person and made everyone feel like his best freind. He was an amazing musician and a truly beautiful person inside and out. My best wishes go out to his wife,band mates,family,and freinds. His brain seemed to be wired so differently from the rest of us and he looked at the world in a different way. What was impossible to us was just scraping the surface through his eyes and it pains me to know i won’t ever hear what crazy,beautiful things he would have come up with next. I wish jimmy a peaceful rest and realize The Rev never dies,bringing us to the true meaning of foREVer. So today i don’t ache over his death, i celebrate the legacy of an effortlesly unique person in a world of people trying to hard, and i believe i speak for every avenged sevenfold fan out there when i say, i love you Jimmy,and i miss you more then words could ever express.

Comment by E December 28, 2010 @ 3:34 pmI remember the moment I found out that The Rev was gone. I was at work and logging on the internet and I saw the headline. I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me. I read the story with tears streaming down my face. I sent my daughter a text telling her and was just numb. I was on the verge of tears the rest of the day. On my way home I plugged up my i-pod as I always do and A Little Piece of Heaven was playing where I had left off that morning. I cried the whole way home and continued as I logged on here to share my sorrow with you all. It is so hard to believe that you can grieve so deeply for someone that you have never met. But I have. The loss of Jimmy has stayed with me to this very day. I cried like a baby while watching the premiere of Nightmare. Seeing the guys without him and seeing his drumkit was just painful to watch. Hearing Jimmy’s voice and watching Matt point to the sky during The Rev’s part in Critical Acclaim during the Uproar tour once again broke my heart. I remember standing there in the croud, mother and daughter hand in hand crying while Afterlife played. He is a loss that I wonder if I will ever move on from. It hit me in such an unexpected way.
On this somber day I send my thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Sullivan family. I also send them to Matt, Brian, Zacky and Johnny and hope they always carry Jimmy in their hearts and minds foREVer, as I’m sure they will. I also send all my love out to the people here who feel the same sorrow that I do. It is up to us to keep his spirit and memory alive. As long as I have breath in my body, a day will not pass that Jimmy will not be celebrated in some way.

Your comment brought me to tears. I know exactly how you feel, it was how his death impacted me as well. To mourn for someone you never met and didn’t know, it seems so odd and I know from people around me who didn’t understand, kinda crazy, but you can’t help what you feel, and mourn for him I know I did, and still do at times. I turned on my i-Pod on the way home from work yesterday, clicked to Avenged music, and Fiction was the first thing that came on, I sang along until Rev’s solo part came on, then I cried, nothing like I did seeing Nightmare premiere, or watching them perform, but I cried all the same. He impacted this family in such an insane way, and while bittersweet, I think his death has brought us all even closer.
I went out last night with some friends, had some drinks, wore my foREVer hoodie, and just had fun, celebrated, and lived. My friends may not have been doing it in rememberance and celebration of Jimmy, but I think Jimmy would have approved all the same.
Time will heal the pain, and sharing with us all will help too. To some degree I think we’ll always hurt a bit over being without him, but I think we have to live for him now that he’s not with us.

And I know what you mean, people do not always understand the depths of this loss. But we do understand and that in itself is a comfort. While I did not go out and celebrate, I wore my new Nightmare shirt to work that my sweet daughter bought me for Christmas. I wore it in tribute to the Rev. It gave me comfort to know I had my love for Jimmy displayed for the world to see.

I remember seeing the post “The Rev” by Avenged Sevenfold on their facebook and immediately thinking “Oh hey maybe Jimmy is giving us an update on the new album!” trying to think the best. But then i saw “It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan…” and my world stopped in that moment. My best friend and I were just on the phone talking about our favorite band, none other than Avenged Sevenfold, and in that second i saw the news, I sprinted to the phone, called him back, and before he could get a word out i told him “Dude, Jimmy died.” All he said after moments passed was “What??” so i told him again, “The Rev died.” All i heard for the next 10 minutes was silent crying, which i knew i wanted to do as well but couldnt find any way to do it, or even move for that matter.
I remember going to bed at 11-ish and telling my dad before i went upstairs, “The Rev died.” Even he, who wasnt yet a fan of Avenged, sat for a few moments with his mouth agape before he came to me and hugged me and said he was sorry. I went upstairs and laid in bed, where I almost always play some Avenged Sevenfold before falling asleep. This time though, i laid there with a million thoughts swirling and a million feelings wanting to be let go, and just thinking of my idol, my hero, was gone. I decided to watch their Live in the LBC DVD before trying to get to sleep. The first sight of Jimmy, where he smashes the opening cymbals to Critical Acclaim, that did it. It opened the floodgates (no pun intended) and i laid in bed crying, sobbing really, until hours into the morning, hours after the DVD ended, and hours after i initially heard the news.
Then i remember when someone leaked Fiction onto Youtube. As much as i wanted to wait, i couldnt. I knew Jimmy sang his last words on that track, and even if it was a different pitch so WMG wouldnt take it down, I had to hear it. I started feeling tears in my eyes as soon as the piano started because i knew that was Jimmy’s work. It just sounded like something his mind would produce. But then i remember the instant his voice rang out “Now i think I understand how this world can overcome a man”, and i was back to square one (or maybe two), sobbing, my head in my hands as the chorus began and his voice belted “Let it burn!”. I called my best friend again, and told him he had to hear it, even if he wanted to wait. He clicked the link and all either of us could hear was the song playing and each of us crying at the sound of his voice. The song would bring us both to tears every single time it was played, and it still is nearly impossible to go one time through without tears flowing yet again.
James Owen “The Rev” Sullivan, you were my idol and my biggest hero. You lived a life that no other man could ever find the passion to lead. You didnt make music into art, you made art into music. Every second you spent on this earth was another second the world was truly at peace, at least in your eyes.
You’re a legend Jimmy, through and through. One year ago today the world found out that your soul and spirit were far too mystifying to last for long. But I will always remember you and what you are: a man who lived to no end, but who’s end came too soon.
My heart, mind, and many prayers go out to Matt Sanders, Brian Haner Jr and Sr, Zachary Baker, Jonathan Seward, and of course Joe, Barbara, Kelly and Katie Sullivan, as well as their entire extended family and the band’s extended family: you the fans. We all share in this loss and always will, and it will always be a reason to cry, but always a reason to thank the Lord for giving us (despite taking far too early) the magical and musical and world-changing man by the name of James Owen Sullivan. The Rev. Fiction.

I figured I’d spend yesterday in tears but they just didn’t come… I smiled instead and even laughed at some of the wonderful things that people said in thei comments about Jimmy but I was reading your message just now and had to move upstairs so my family didn’t see me crying! Your words are beautiful and you most definitely are not alone in feeling this way.
I remember how things played out last year as well. I found out at 11.21am on the 29th December. I had important exams when I went back to school in January so had been revising the day before and that morning and only found out when my friend (who lives in another country) texted me the news. It was both the worst and most considerate and thoughtful text I’ve ever received…
But the bit where you talked about how your dad reacted and told you he was sorry was what really got me. I don’t think it was until mid-January when one of my teachers overheard me mentioning Jimmy’s passing to a girl in my class that someone (the teacher) actually said they were sorry that he was gone. Everyone else seemed to feel that, because he was a guy in a band and not someone I knew personally (or that they cared about- I’m the only person I know who likes A7X), that it didn’t matter. But it did and so reading your words here gave me hope.
So yeah, thank you for posting this and drawing the tears out of me :) I needed that.

We all feel heavy hearts, and being an A7X fan for 4 years and sticking by these guys and their music, i cant help but feel as though a part of me is lost. I hope we all comfort eachother on this day, no matter where we are in the world and that we can feel him still laughing along with us.

I was playing Rock Band because I had gotten it as a Christmas present. I was actually playing some of A7X’s music for a while, and then I went to check my Twitter account on my iPod while I was waiting for the screen to load. Then I came to a post one of my friends tweeted that just said, “My drumming idol is dead :(” followed by a link. At that point, I instantly knew who he was talking about since he was the one who introduced me to A7X. It just hit me like a brick wall at 110 mph. I was just sitting there for ten minutes straight in pure shock. When my brain started to work and process thought again, I said to myself, “There’s no way”. I was not sure if it was a joke or not since my mind was still numb, so I clicked the link. When I was brought to a news article about his death, I knew it was true.
I sat in bed for the rest of the night, and for two days straight, blasting all the A7X albums I had at the time and thinking to myself, “I can’t believe he’s dead” over and over again. I was so numb that I couldn’t even cry.
The death of Jimmy has made me learn that people have the ability to change the lives of others without truly knowing it. I never knew of the Rev’s antics before he died. I didn’t watch videos of him chasing stallion ducks, drinking absinthe at the hotel with Synyster Gates, or singing his famous “grapes in the mouth” song until several months after he died. When I finally got the chance to, it made me realize that the world didn’t just lose a great drummer; it lost a truly unique person. The Rev was a teacher in many ways; he shared his gift of drumming with everyone he knew and didn’t know, and he also taught us to be better and more confident people in life.
Sullivan family, if you’re reading this, I want to thank you for blessing us with a truly beautiful person. I send out my thoughts and prayers to you as well as Matt, Brian, Zacky, Johnny, and everyone else that Jimmy knew. Thank you for everything that Jimmy has ever done.
I don’t believe in God, but I believe in the afterlife. He’ll live on foREVer in our hearts, and someday, we’re all going to meet him.

Every day, well before his death the same, as did my prayers for all of Avenged and their families and friends. After Jimmy died, I just stopped believing. Asked me all the time why God would take away a life of such a good person and now by many others? And never found a plausible answer enough to cover my pain. I do not remember exactly when, but remember seeing one of the first interviews with Matt and he talking about Jimmy something just touched my heart, he just said (* not exactly those words, but with the same intent) “I wanted him were here, but do not know what he passed by, could be in pain, but never know, I just have to believe he is in better place, without being selfish. ” And one other time Syn said something. This short time completely changed my way to see this terrible event again. With much pain, I came to believe, because it was one thing that remained to be always with him. And how as a friend, a brother who was present every day Matt and the others could live with that and I like a simple fan who has never been to a concert of them, but always admired and wished for they could not also?
Another thing that touched me was how I got this terrible statement, was in the room of my house with my mother, seeing a concert by The Who, was telling her that not all my favorite drummers were dead, only my best ” Favorite “was alive who was Jimmy (* because John Bonham and Keith Moon, all already know). My brother enters the room and tells me that Jimmy had died, I was lost for days.
That day on December 28 was harder for me than the past, because now only had to tell myself it was not. Even trying to put into my mind and felt all along that there would he be a duck hunting, playing with Johnny or just be there being himself as ever.
He changed my life and I’m a better person that I could never be and I’m thankful for this. Better since I’m meet Avenged Sevenfold i’m being a better person, they show me different thing for different ways, no exactly told me how way to go, but always will have another ways to go and you can always go for a different way. The only thing that you can’t ever do it is let it go of your dream for fear or just for no one believe on you. Because always have someone who will believe on you.
As I still believe that I’ll go meet Avenged Sevenfold some day and no ones believe on me, i know that have someone out there who believe.

First I tought you went in 2010 and it took me nearly a month,before I discoverred that you went in 2009. Since then there´s hasn´t past a day I don´t hate myself,because I didn´t knowing it on time. You have inspired my inso many ways. Not only where you the greatest drummer I´ve seen,but also the greatest person I´ve ever seen. I truly wish I had met you in real,but guess that wasn´t ment to be. I have started playing the drums when I was 4,but after 11 years I quit. On the day I heard about you death I started playing again and I will never quit anymore,because of you. Also my prayer goes out to the Sullivan family and offcourse the band and relatives. I´m happy that still after such a long time people still talk about how they miss you,because this means you where not just a great person,but a true HERO.
