American Idol contestant James Durbin got quite the compliment tonight from Randy Jackson after performing Sammy Hagar’s “Heavy Metal” with Zakk Wylde. The judge stated (3:57-4:02), “I could see you on stage with Avenged Sevenfold and Ozzy at the next Ozzfest.”
Thanks Chandler for sending this in & Mark for a link to the video.

Comment by tiff April 13, 2011 @ 7:33 pmHOPEFULLY Randy was giving a little hint. maybe he knows something we dont know lol. maybe A7X will be on the next ozzfest???
Comment by Arron Johnson April 13, 2011 @ 7:47 pmHim messing up the fact that Zakk doesn’t play with Ozzy anymore…I doubt it.
Comment by Brandon April 13, 2011 @ 7:55 pmLmao, true.
Comment by Arron Johnson April 13, 2011 @ 11:21 pmThat Gus guy (The guy who ACTUALLY plays for Ozzy, which you most likely already know lol) was probably watching and thinking………asshole.
Prolly cause Gus G is extremely forgettable. He’s not that good.
Comment by Tanner April 14, 2011 @ 8:05 pmThat is so awesome!
Comment by Alyssa April 13, 2011 @ 7:50 pmAw man I missed it!!
Comment by EmilyA7X April 13, 2011 @ 7:52 pmBut that’s awesomeeee!!!
I never watch American Idol, but after seeing this guy, I’m regretting it this season. He’s amazing! And then Randy telling him he could be with Avenged Sevenfold? I Knew he was always my favorite judge.
Comment by OmegaRS April 13, 2011 @ 7:55 pmI personally love the fact that Randy mentioned em but, James Durbin shouldn’t be in the same sentence or category as OZZY & Avenged.
Comment by Em April 13, 2011 @ 7:56 pmI totally agree! I didn’t really care for him as much as I tried to
Comment by Kasherton April 13, 2011 @ 8:14 pmYeah I got more of the 80′s metal vibe from this guy. I was feelin like Cinderella and Poison etc etc.
Comment by Clutch April 13, 2011 @ 10:06 pmHe did do an amazing job on the Sammy Hagar song though. It might’ve been because Zakk was standing there and shredding it up behind the guy, but I thought he did a great job on Heavy Metal.
Comment by Brandon April 14, 2011 @ 5:07 amThat’s American Idol?! Has it actually come to accept hard rock and metal?
Comment by Mike April 13, 2011 @ 7:59 pmDOMINATION!
Comment by Jessica April 13, 2011 @ 8:06 pm…NO. FREAKING. WAY.
Reppin’ the best band in the world is such a broad field! I am quite proud. Wanna cry with happiness :)
Comment by Bobbi April 13, 2011 @ 8:07 pmI walked out of the room literally seconds before Randy said that. Can’t believe I missed it.
Comment by Chelsea April 13, 2011 @ 8:08 pmof course randy is the one to mention avenged lol hes the cool one
Comment by DeathByMetal33 April 13, 2011 @ 8:18 pmWait is this a coincidence that Zakk Wylde(who is at almost ever ozzfest), appears on american idol then Randy says “Avenged Sevenfold and Ozzy at the next Ozzfest” could this be Avenged’s next tour after the Welcome to the Family Tour ends in June? Ozzfest usually starts in late July or August PERFECT TIMING, and they played ozzfest when they weren’t so big, now could Ozzy have re invited them to Co headline? On Ozzfest website it says 2011 bands coming soon. Could this have been a publicity stunt Sharon Osbourne put together…..cause what are the chances Randy Jackson mentioning Avenged Sevenfold and Ozzy at the next ozzfest, and Zakk Wylde playing guitar. Lets be truthful this James Durbin dude is not even close to good enough to play with A7X or Ozzy he belongs in a crappy emo band that will never go anywhere….or in the next backstreet boys. Maybe I am thinking to much but think about it.
Comment by Rya7xn April 13, 2011 @ 8:31 pmyeeahhh.. i think people are thinking way too much into this, lol
Comment by jon April 13, 2011 @ 8:43 pmI agree. Wilde doesn’t even play w/ Ozzy anymore…
Comment by Clutch April 13, 2011 @ 10:07 pmTHATS RIGHTT!! youu better mention Avenged Sevenfoldd!<3333
Comment by Steff:) April 13, 2011 @ 8:35 pmI now respect Randy Jackson ^.^
Comment by LindseyA7X April 13, 2011 @ 8:44 pmthats whack
Comment by mike Diesel April 13, 2011 @ 9:07 pmHell yeah! once you’ve been mentioned on a show like this, you know you’ve made it!!!! congrats guys! Jimmy must be having a field day in heaven :)
Comment by Jon April 13, 2011 @ 9:34 pmonly thing is that song isnt heavy metal at all haha completely different genre
Comment by rbx April 14, 2011 @ 12:22 amYES. Our boys getting even more recognition for their talent is amazing. I’m so stoked for them. <3
Comment by Theresa April 14, 2011 @ 12:30 amWow Zakk Wylde continues to ruin himself.
Comment by Josh7X April 14, 2011 @ 12:47 amImpossible
Comment by Erik April 15, 2011 @ 2:38 amThis is amazing!!!
Comment by claudia April 14, 2011 @ 12:53 amI love how people cheered after he said Avenged sevenfold!! xD
are they on the verge of world domination to be mentioned in the same sentence as ozzy?
Comment by kraftwerk April 14, 2011 @ 1:15 amYou know youre HUGE when youre mentioned on American Idol…. our boys have hit the big time!!! WOOT!!!
Comment by Ashley April 14, 2011 @ 1:45 amJesus, that song was terrible. I can’t believe Zakk would associate himself with something as bad as that.
People are so easily pleased…
I can’t see how having their name mentioned on American Idol gets anyone excited.
Metal is a lifestyle, it’s passionate. It’s not a fucking brand.
Comment by Benji April 14, 2011 @ 2:48 amcause avenged wants overly commercialized music compared to them >.>
its like matt said, they don’t do commercials. they only want to be promoted with things that rep them as a band, or the music that they do. avenged shouldn’t be compared to anything that is set up like American Idol.
Comment by danny April 14, 2011 @ 2:55 amlol really? people can’t see why fans are excited? it’s not about comparing that kid to avenged or ozzy (because theres obviously no comparison) or the ‘lifestyle’ or being commercialized… it aint that serious, folks…
…it’s about your favorite band getting the recognition they deserve on national television.
Comment by jon April 14, 2011 @ 5:00 amI’m all for my favourite band getting recognition and becoming big. But I don’t think this is the recognition they deserve being a metal band.
This is American Idol we are talking about. A part of the music industry that is fake, and solely created for those big men who want to make as much money as possible.
Comment by Benji April 14, 2011 @ 10:20 ambut you have to admit that the kid has some pipes. i’m oldschool when it comes to metal and i don’t care if my favorite band goes more commercial. they deserve that, because they’re also trying to make a living out of it. that’s THEIR JOB. god! kids will never get it
Comment by Roger April 15, 2011 @ 5:21 amgod James durbin rocks so much. im so proud ^_^
Comment by Tomer April 14, 2011 @ 5:19 amWhat shame that Zakk Wylde went and stooped this low and went on american idol. I hope Avenged never appears on there.
Comment by Joe7x April 14, 2011 @ 5:43 amExactly! I was reading this comments and can’t believe what people’s reaction to this is.
Comment by Benji April 14, 2011 @ 10:09 amI agree…kids cry all the time because the metal community doesn’t respect A7X…well here you go…this is why….please, real metal bands like Slayer, Megadeth, Overkill etc would kill themselves if they were ever associated with American Idol…
Comment by Kenny V April 14, 2011 @ 11:09 amI agree with DBN. Instead of reading into it as a pure miracle or an insult to metal, take it as it is – respect and mention that A7X clearly deserves.
Comment by Bobbi April 14, 2011 @ 12:18 pmExactly! Well said!
People need to stop worrying about “selling out” or being associated with “popular” stuff. It has basically become the “popular” thing to try too hard to be “anti-popular.”
Can we not just enjoy the music and enjoy the comment for what it is? What the hell is “selling out” anyways?
If I like a song I listen to it, if I don’t… then I don’t… it’s not rocket-science. I don’t worry about if it’s not metal enough or too metal, who cares?
I can jam to a7x and “look at me now” by chris brown in the same day and hear taylor swift on the radio and respect her ability to put together really catchy melodies with a nice story. It’s all good, nothing wrong with that.
Much respect to A7X, Randy, James (my favorite on Idol in a while), and Zakk.
Comment by Blake T April 14, 2011 @ 4:11 pmthank you my friend. for a while i thought i was the only metalhead that can respect other genres…i go from avenged sevenfold to children of bodom to lamb of god to kid cudi on my ipod with no issue lol…people need to relax with this crap.
Comment by otis April 14, 2011 @ 4:23 pmWord!
Comment by Bobbi April 14, 2011 @ 5:09 pmI was going to post something very similar to what you did. I have no idea why people freak out over stuff like this. I enjoy musical talent, and that includes many genres. Members of avenged sevenfold have admitted to enjoy artist such as britney spears and lady gaga. Enjoying music is about listening to anything that you enjoy, not just picking a genre and sticking to it because you want to be “different” or “dedicated.”
Comment by Anthony April 14, 2011 @ 4:44 pmSelling out is bad. You don’t write music you love, you write it for more fans and money. Linkin Park = Sellouts. Honestly how do you not know what selling out is?
Comment by Paul from CT April 14, 2011 @ 7:03 pmTo be honest, I think “selling out” is a bullshit term. The better phrase for a band like Linkin Park is “gone down the shitter”.
Comment by Alyssa April 15, 2011 @ 11:16 amCompletely agree with you. People need to stop worrying about genres and just listen to whatever sounds good. i mean I could go from a7x to pantera to motley crue to korn to pink floyd to michael jackson all in one day with no worries. and what is up with everyone using the word “sellout?” I just read a comment that said, zakk wylde is a sellout for having signature guitars…really?! Well then I guess that makes syn, zacky, dave mustaine, and dimebag sellouts too. Come on people, grow up! don’t you know how ridiculous that makes you sound. Point is, listen to whatever sounds good to you and don’t worry about anything else…simple as that.
Comment by francyA7X April 15, 2011 @ 11:32 amIs it really that bad to listen to music that is different from Avenged Sevenfold that you have to react like this? Come on. I’m a dedicated A7X fan, but I can go from them to Rise Against, Owl City, Michael Jackson, Breaking Benjamin, the Beatles, Coldplay, and even Paramore, and still love their sounds. It’s really about who you like, and if you don’t like how someone sounds, you don’t have to act like their fans are wrong for liking them.
Comment by Gabby7X April 16, 2011 @ 12:28 pmDurbin will never be good enough to share a stage with a7x….good shout out but I will lose respect for a7x if they ever share a stage with an american idol contestant…regardless if he wins
Comment by Anonymous April 14, 2011 @ 8:31 amman i love ZW but if the signature guitars, effects pedals, amps, and everything else didnt make him a sellout, this sealed the deal.
Comment by willxthexthrill April 14, 2011 @ 8:35 amHow do signature guitars make him a sellout? Does that make ZV and Syn sell-outs…?
Comment by Rachel April 14, 2011 @ 12:16 pmI have to agree with you there Rachel.. every great guitarist have sig. guitars.. not only Zacky and Syn but the greats like Slash and of course the god himself Dimebag (RIP) .. it isnt selling out.. its allowing us to have a piece of them =]
Comment by Nikola April 14, 2011 @ 2:28 pmI am so sick of the word “sellout!”
Comment by francyA7X April 15, 2011 @ 11:06 amand how the hell do signature guitars make him a sellout?! That was thee most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
WOW! The guys must be freakin’ out having their band mentioned by Randy. That was awesome! :)
Comment by Jessica April 14, 2011 @ 9:11 amI don’t see why people are getting so upset up Zakk Wylde being on American Idol, if anything it’s cool that metal music is getting recognition on a TV series that normally hosts everything but metal. This didn’t do any harm, if anything it boosted peoples opinions on the genre in a positive way. The fact that Avenged Sevenfold was mentioned by one of these judges is awesome, and it wasn’t even the rockstar on the panel that mentioned them. And I thought that kid’s performance was pretty great, awesome and powerful voice!
Comment by steve April 14, 2011 @ 9:29 amI Flipped When I Heard This. Awesome. I Kept Hitting The Rewind Button. Felt Like I Couldn’t Hear Randy Say It Enough. And If They Played At Ozzfest After This Tour… I’d Sound Like An Excited Little School Girl.
Comment by foREVerTJ April 14, 2011 @ 10:00 amWhy isn’t this kid in some awesome power metal band? He’s got the range for it for sure.
Comment by A7XEric April 14, 2011 @ 10:34 amI really, really, don’t like his voice.
Comment by nick April 14, 2011 @ 11:02 amAlso, you people need to get over the whole “selling out” thing. oh my! he got a signature guitar! god forbid he gets recognized for his work. I mean, does that mean Zacky and Syn have sold out? They have sig. guitars, and clothing. Their music has been in video games and in movies. Get over it people. Let them do what they want. stop bitching about how you think they are a sell out. This isn’t the early 90′s anymore when it was hip to be “underground”. Deal with it.
Comment by nick April 14, 2011 @ 11:06 amnot a big deal. rly
Comment by gabriel April 14, 2011 @ 11:17 amlol at the comments on this post…looks like hardcore metalheads that love a7x and the non metalheads that love a7x are finally clashing on something. cmon guys, enjoy the exposure regardless of your opinion on Wylde or AI. we are a family, lets not fight over something that can only have positive effects. jesus christ.
Comment by otis April 14, 2011 @ 11:33 amAmen.
Comment by Jessica April 14, 2011 @ 6:13 pmI think it’s cool that they mentioned them, but the boys are metal/rock music makers. I don’t see them as those people that walk down the red carpet in fancy tuxes. They should stay just the way they are, and gain more fans, ad become legends not celebrities.
Comment by Alexis April 14, 2011 @ 2:22 pmbest words randy could ever say “… hopefully america will bring metal back cause i could see you on stage with avenged sevenfold..”
Comment by A7X_ROCKS ! April 14, 2011 @ 3:12 pmI was surprised Randy even knew who Avenged Sevenfold are lol, that was awesome!!!
Comment by Manny April 14, 2011 @ 3:22 pmits fuckin sweet hearing them mentioned on american idol. I personally hate the show but gained some respect. my mom was watching it and i heard avenged sevenfold and ran in their like a mad dog hahah my mom was flipping too ahaha rock on \m/

Pingback by Top Posts — WordPress.com April 14, 2011 @ 5:09 pmMeh. I guess now Shads wil have to revise that “best band you’ve never heard of” statement.
There is really nothing too exciting here. American Idol is on season 1,000 and Hulk Hogan punched out Ryan Seacrest, the judges are lame now, if this was season 1-3 or so, it would matter, but taking so many years for such a small plug, it’s such a “meh” moment.
Avenged isn’t going to be on Ozzfest. Ozzfest may only be a one-off like last year, and Avenged will most likely be in Europe at the time.
Comment by Lefty Gates April 14, 2011 @ 6:03 pmGuys shut up about stuff being popular and selling out. FYI… Avenged Sevenfold is getting seriously popular recently. They are one of the biggest bands today. Does that make them suck? no. It means people are recognizing true talent
Comment by Anonymous April 14, 2011 @ 6:13 pmA LOT of people watch American Idol, not all of them know who Avenged Sevenfold is, so I think it is great that Randy mentioned them.
That’s all I’m sayin’.
Comment by *Nothing but Fiction* April 14, 2011 @ 11:29 pmThat’s the only reason i love that Randy said that. Other than that, James Durbin < Ozzy. James Durbin < Avenged Sevenfold.
Comment by Em April 15, 2011 @ 9:15 pmIt’s nice to see A7X gets the recognition that they deserves :D
I gotta give credit to Zack though. He did a favour for Durbin. Durbin, granted he’s not as good as Dio, but hey, he’s better than half of the new metal band singers out there
Comment by la chucaracha April 15, 2011 @ 4:11 ami don’t know how i possibly could be thrilled by this american idol is bad it’s like the shool of popshit star a la lady gaga. But i need to say randy jackson has good music taste.
Comment by Doom April 15, 2011 @ 7:16 amI’m gonna say this is a bad thing that A7X was mentioned on American Idol and zakk wylde on there probably wasnt good either
Comment by Jake Fee April 15, 2011 @ 7:38 pmWhen I heard Randy say “Avenged Sevenfold”, I was like: “Ok, Randy rocks.”
Comment by Chelsea April 15, 2011 @ 8:58 pmPretty cool that A7X was mentioned in the same breath as Ozzy. It’s seems as though the boys are beginning to achieve legendary status.
Comment by Brady April 16, 2011 @ 6:40 amAW HELL YUSH! :3 A7X is getting more and MOAR recongizing around the world!!! X3
Comment by Byron R. D April 16, 2011 @ 10:03 amSo cool having the band getting more recognition since, as we all know, they deserve it! I don’t think the fact that they were mentioned on Idol is necessarily a bad thing. BTW, Randy knowing Avenged gives me much more respect for him.
Comment by JaCaria April 17, 2011 @ 8:39 amRandy Jackson!!
Comment by Maddz April 20, 2011 @ 1:24 pm
