Loudwire have posted their review of Avenged Sevenfold’s fourth single “Buried Alive” giving it 4/5 stars. M Shadows recently stated the band were favoring an unedited version of the song as the single and they’re looking for a “movie guy” type to help bring the video to life. In addition, the song will begin impacting radio on September 20th.
Avenged Sevenfold‘s new single ‘Buried Alive’ is epic. Not just in a critical sense, but in the song’s construction. Like any good power ballad, it builds up to a massive, earth-shaking explosion.
The track, the latest single off ‘Nightmare,’ is not too far removed from Metallica in that it’s contemplative and thoughtful for the first half, showing off the softer side of A7X. That doesn’t mean that they’ve gone soft. Not even close. All you have to do is stick around for the second half of the song, because that’s when things really start to boil over. Singer M. Shadows demonstrates that he is a capable singer, crooning his lyrics over steady guitar work that slowly starts building into the type of pummeling riffage that could make thunder shoot out of your speakers.
The percussive roar is another standout feature of the song. That’s when and where the arena rock energy starts to assert itself. Where them lighters at?
A7X up the ante by the fourth minute of the song, turning a thoughtful tune into an aggressive and agitated monster, replete with galloping riffs. Seriously, it reminds us of those classic, six-minutes-and-counting tunes that Metallica peddled to great success in the ’80s. A7X climb the stairway to dynamics and employ a time-honored musical device of building up for a breakdown. The band’s Iron Maiden influences are also quite present in the riffage. ‘Buried Alive’ is full of moods and tempos and is easily one of their best tunes from ‘Nightmare.’

One of my favorite songs off that album. Very Metallica-esque. :)

Comment by Cal September 10, 2011 @ 7:58 pmThis is definitely one of my top three songs off of this album. I was definitely a little dubious on what the fuck they were doing and how this was all going to go until they released Buried Alive on their youtube page before the album dropped. It convinced me. It *more* than convinced me, I realized after about the sixth replay of the song on youtube.
Comment by River September 10, 2011 @ 8:03 pmThere’s always all the buildup and anticipation between any album, much less Avenged albums. Their sound and what they experiment with and the direction they take with their songs has always changed drastically from one album to the next and so I’m always biting my nails and hoping I like the new album as much as I did the one before, but oh me of little faith.
Buried Alive is a fucking masterpiece that really showcases how much their sound and their songwriting has matured. They’ve *always* been insanely talented, but it takes time and practice to get your shit together no matter what band you are. I remember when I first heard Unfortunate Snort (Pinkly Smooth) back in 2005 and went “jesus christ they’re talented, they really are.” Then when the self-titled dropped and I heard Little Piece of Heaven, I was completely thrilled to hear that sound matured and grown with the guys’ songwriting.
It’s the same with Buried Alive. We always knew they were capable of writing shit like this, we just had to hang in there and wait for it to show up. I completely understand if Avenged isn’t your cup of tea musically, but if you’re in to this kind of music and you don’t give this song serious respect… I don’t know what’s wrong with you.
Awesome, so it’s confirmed? Sweet. And it sounds like it will be unedited. Hopefully this song gets the full package; B-sides, music video, etc. Not just a new song to be burned out on the radio.

Comment by Loghen September 10, 2011 @ 11:50 pmThe song deserves an epic video.
Damn right it’s one of the best from Nightmare!
Comment by Anna September 11, 2011 @ 1:53 am5/5 would be a more accurate rating…
Comment by mattiedeathbat September 11, 2011 @ 2:05 amI am kind of surprised that this has not been released on the radio since the album has been out for a while now. Regardless epic song.
Comment by Megan September 11, 2011 @ 4:04 amI get that music is to each his own and all…but I really don’t understand why there are so many reviews like this one praising a piece of A7X material all the way through the review then they give it a 4/5 or an 8/10 just because they don’t wanna give it a perfect score.
Comment by Adam September 11, 2011 @ 5:30 amWhat does it actually mean by ‘unedited’? :S
Comment by H September 11, 2011 @ 7:06 amThe radio version won’t be a cropped edit of the album version. Search So Far Away radio edit on YouTube for an example of a radio edit.
Comment by Mike September 11, 2011 @ 8:23 amYeah. It’s a good thing theyre going with unedited. So far away just isn’t the same when they cut part of the solo out.. Its like the best part.
Comment by Anonymous September 11, 2011 @ 5:40 pmAnd I can’t imagine buried alive being cut.
Yeah I’ve heard the So far away radio edit version on youtube, but where I live they play the whole song on the radio, so idk? lol
Comment by DRHa7x1 September 11, 2011 @ 8:12 pmYeah. Some stations do play the regular version. It’s weird.. Mine plays both of them at different times. It’s annoying when they play the edited version.. It’s not like it saves much time anyway.
Comment by Linds September 12, 2011 @ 1:07 pmAh, i see, i see ^.^ thank you :)
