The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards are live tonight and Yahoo! have compiled a “The VMAs’ Most Surprising Best New Artist Snubs.” Avenged Sevenfold are included, not for a loss, but for their win over Rihanna, Panic! At The Disco, Chris Brown and Angels & Airwaves in 2006.

Winner: Avenged Sevenfold (2006)
In perhaps the most memorable upset in Best New Artist history, heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold took down Rihanna, Chris Brown, Panic! at the Disco, Angels & Airwaves and James Blunt to scoop the title in 2006. The Californian rockers have capitalized on their loyal fan base, selling over four million albums worldwide and taking their 2010 album “Nightmare” to the top spot of the Billboard 200.

Thanks Lindsey for sending this in.

Yeah I saw that on there today. I knew it was only a matter of time before the A7X Family jumped all over it! Could have picked a better picture of Syn though! Or maybe the Shadster

Not most surprising to all of your fans…not sure where Yahoo has been.

It was still pretty surprising. “City Of Evil” had done very well but no one thought even throughout all the voting that they would actually beat Chris Brown or Rihanna alone. If I remember something they said in an interview afterwards correctly they had basically been told to lose with grace by management beforehand, haha.

Hell yeah!!! Deathbats will always prevail!!! Love the guys. They deserve every ounce of credit they’ve gotten over the years. They’ve worked their asses of to get where they are now. And I’m proud to have helped them. Myeslf and every single other deathbat out there!!! Were not just fans of Avenged Sevenfold. We’re a fucking family! foREVer and always a deathbat. <3 :) Keep rockin guys!!

I remember watching that! But today’s meaning of “rock” is completely off. Avenged sevenfold have had amazing albums but haver been nominated since then.

I agree, most rock these days has no edge too it. It seems like most bands today have either ambition or aggression, but never both. Its either Seether style stuff, which is aggressive but all sounds the same, or Arcade Fire indie/alternative stuff that is out there but is pretty mellow. Avenged Sevenfold has both qualities.

Well I wasn’t surprised at all there a bad-ass band ppl have too pick them there like the best band that has ever existed

Comment by Michelle

They’re the only winner there that wasn’t criticized by the writer(s) lol

The thing I love about being part of the “Family” is if a7x is still making albums 20 to 30 years from now, we all will be buying their records partying at their concerts with the same passion and intensity. Since 2006 a7x have only gotten bigger, whereas nothing has been heard from 3 of the 5 other nominees in that category.

Watching the video of their win still makes me so happy.

haha I remember watching that and being so excited when Avenged won. The look on everyone’s face was priceless, and of course Zacky topped it all off by saying “and for all of you who don’t know, now you know”…greatest moment at the VMAs ever! now i don’t even bother watching that crap awards show.

My 2 memories of that night:
1) All the other nominees faces of “who are these guys?”
2) Jimmy at acceptance speech going “I’d like to thank God… which ever one I believe in”
