Avenged Sevenfold will grace the cover of the new issue of Metal Hammer out next week. They’re promising that this is the “biggest and best Avenged Sevenfold story you’ll read anywhere this year” so check back tomorrow for details.

UPDATE: Metal Hammer preview their interview with Avenged Sevenfold in the new issue. You can pre-order your issue here. It’ll hit newsstands on July 23rd. You can also purchase the copy digitally on Google Play here.

Avenged Sevenfold share some pretty lofty ambitions with us in their huge cover feature in our new issue, and it turns out that they have the biggest UK rock and metal festival in their sights…

“We really, truly believe in metal,” says frontman M Shadows. “We grew up on the altar of bands like Maiden and Megadeth and Pantera and Metallica, and if bands that are younger could look up to us like that, that’d be the hugest compliment of all time. We want to headline Download. We want to play Rock In Rio. The goals aren’t to have millions of records, it’s to be the top of our game in our generation.”

Not to sound like a total dick, but there’s not a lot of bands that are ready to carry the torch,” adds guitarist Synyster Gates. “I honestly feel like we’re that band. When you start a band it’s totally fun and games, and it’s all fun now, but there’s no more games. We’ve had fun, now we want to make a mark. Now, it’s ‘Let’s make history’.”

This is scary, they’ve def put a target on their backs even more so now because of all this “we wanna be the next metal legends” and being so bold about it, all the haters are gathered against them to hear the new album. I hope they can walk the walk, this album better change metal as we know it or they are gonna get blasted by alot of metal fans (NOT THAT A7X FANS CARE) I’m just surprised at how cocky they are with this album! Kinda gets me even more pumped to hear it because now it HAS ro be great if they are going out on a ledge saying they are the next great metal band (we already knew that) But it’s like…..boom in your face haters!! We’re here and we’re gonna change metal forever :)

Comment by jruss

I completely agree with you. It’s not like them to say a statement like that.

Comment by Kaylee

Yeah, matt is pretty much the spokesman for them and he has always shy’d away when asked about other bands being rivals or what the haters have to say, he’s always biting his tongue and taking the high road rather than talk smack. But it’s refreshing to hear the band say “hey all you haters, eff yourselves, we’re reinventing metal.”

Comment by jruss

They’ve always been cocky. They got labeled back with City of Evil that they were the new Motley Crue and they embraced it. I’m surprised that people are surprised at them saying this. They’ve always been competative, they’ve always wanted to be the best oout there. They have infinite and undying respect for the metal bands they’ve looked up to through the years but unlike a lot of what I’ve seen of the metal scene, they believe in it being an evolution, not the same thing from two decades ago. I’m so excited about this album simply because of how fearless they are of failure.

Comment by River

Personally I’m surprised they made a statement like that, but they do deserve the title. So stoked to hear the album.

Comment by Peter Vandenberg

To be honest I don’t think them making a statement like that is a huge deal. First of all, we don’t know the context in which they said it. It was probably after they were asked if they could emulate the success of Metallica and Iron Maiden. They weren’t gonna say “No. We can’t be that big”. I think them having self confidence is a great thing.

Comment by O-H

i have a hard time believing they said any of whats quoted.

If they don’t have this kind of view about their own music then how could they expect other people to respect what they are doing. Regardless of whether other modern bands will love them or hate them for this, their accomplishments thus far demand the respect that they’re mentioning in this article… and with Avenged you can’t deny that they deserve everything they’ve gotten up to this point and then some. When it comes down to it, they are the best chance this generation of music has of being mentioned as a cornerstone of or influence on the genre when people look back at today’s rock/metal acts. No one has ever changed the world by going out and doing what someone else already is. These guys are the only band daring enough to completely turn their own image upside down with every album release for the sake of being original and true to themselves and their inspiration. For these reasons, I think the boldness matches their vision, and they should be commended for it. Other bands can read this and bitch about it while Avenged sets more records and headlines all their shows, or they can step up to the line Avenged is drawing in the sand and challenge themselves to create something truly inspiring and worth listening to.

Amen!! So much crap music being pushed out these days. It’s seems like most bands believe in quantity over quality. While that may work for a short period of time, it eventually leads to the bands demise. Avenged have always been very calculated in every move they make. Picking a new drummer (remember everyone wanted them to keep Portnoy??? C’mon…), taking time off, writing, promoting songs, albums, tours, ect. They very rarely make the wrong decisions, and that’s what’s led to their staying power and what will keep them around for a long time to come. In today’s world of rock/metal music you have crap, and then you have Avenged Sevenfold.

where can you buy metal hammer in stores? walgreens does not carry it.

Comment by stephenSyns

You can call your local major bookstores (Barnes & Noble, etc.) and ask if they carry it. I know that my B&N does but it takes a few weeks after the issue is released to arrive.

Comment by Deathbat News

I havent found it anywhere. Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble….nowhere. Guess I’ll just wait for it to show up on this site.

Are we gonna get the article here? :)

Comment by SethMelvin

It’s a possibility.

Comment by Deathbat News

Haha yes!

Comment by SethMelvin

If there is anyway you could make that happen DBN, I would really appreciate it. I’ve been everywhere I can think of to look for the magazine (B&N, Guitar Center, Walgreen’s, I even went to what someone told me is called “Wal-Mart” **shivers**), and it continues to elude my grasp.
