Avenged Sevenfold In Helsinki’s Metro & Sweden’s Aftonbladet.

Avenged Sevenfold were overseas promoting their new album “Hail To The King” and split up to speak with Helsinki’s Metro and Sweden’s Aftonbladet. M Shadows and Johnny Christ were featured in the Metro (FinnishPage 11) and Joni kindly translated the interesting subjects spoken about: “Shepherd Of Fire” begins with booming bells and a symphonic atmosphere. Sounds like Black Sabbath meets Wagner. “Hail To The King” reminds the writer of Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore’s band Rainbow. Shadows says that they didn’t think of Rainbow when they wrote the song but many people have mentioned it. “This Means War” sounds like Metallica’s “Sad But True.” M admits that it does sound like it and said they tried to get a blues-sound but bass parts sucked ass. Johnny also admits that. Johnny has tattooed a Finnish horror-movie starlet, Vampira, on his right arm. He says he didn’t know that she was from Finland but knew she was from a Nordic country.  Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance talked to Aftonbladet (Swedish/Translated) about knowing that Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan would be proud of them, the new sound being bigger-than-life and gigantic: “It’ll kick you in the teeth as soon as you press play,” playing in Europe and more.

If “This Means War” sounds like “Sad but True” then I can safely say we heard the rift on the website radio teaser, when it just had a single guitar that faded in and out while M Shadows talked. Sounds just like it.

Also CANNOT WAIT for Shepard of Fire

I have to agree with you as that riff and “Sad but True” are both in D Phrygian, so harmonically they are the same. Or at least the part we heard was the same. Although, I thought it sounded more like “Wherever I May Roam” the first time I heard it, but it is harmonically closer to “Sad but True”.

The real song is very alike Sad but True!

I heard the songs at the listening session, they’re amazing! Especially those two!

For those of you who don’t know Wagner: here, here and here.

I think I’m most excited to hear Shepard of Fire, at first just because of a bad ass name but now because of the feel described for it!
